Prithveen Rajan made a comeback to single seater formula racing after ten years making it to the podium in two races including a win!

2020 has been a challenging year in a manner unprecedented owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The world was under complete lock down while businesses took a hit, sporting events were cancelled and to top it all, the Olympics, the greatest multi discipline sporting event, symbolising the united spirit of humanity beyond man made boundaries and divisions stood cancelled.

Towards the end of the year, amidst a nationwide restoration of normalcy, I was approached by a team to take part in the National Championship in the Formula LGB 1300 category. I was more than happy to be part of a collective force in the sport’s resumption in our country after the unforeseen break, signing up for a drive with Kolkata Joba Racing team, backed by Ortho-One Orthopaedic Speciality Centre (Sports Medicine Partner), Chettinad Sporting (Race Tuner) and Orygen (Energy Bar Partner)

I dived right back into the thick of competition, bagging two good results in the last round of the championship, a 3rd and 1st place finish. It’s been a great way to sign off for 2020. Wishing everyone a great 2021 and hoping those affected by Covid are on path to recovery

Tennis Elbow

"Though this condition is known as Tennis Elbow, this is not commonly seen in Tennis Players. It is also termed as elbow lateral epicondylitis. All age groups go through Tennis Elbow, especially the working class. It can occur either due to a single injury or repetitive work pattern. Usually one has pain along the outer aspect of the elbow (lateral epicondyle of the elbow). It occurs due to inflammation of the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon. During the acute inflammatory phase, it is always advisable to take adequate rest with anti-inflammatory medications.  Unfortunately, majority of the population do neglect treatment and continue working in spite of the pain.  At one point of time the pain will become more severe and non-responsive to medication, but 60 percentage of initial pain will get healed completely over a period of one year.

Patients not responding to anti-inflammatory medication may need steroid injections at the site of inflammation.

Before using steroid injection, one must be aware of its pros and cons.  It is the duty of the practitioner to make the patient aware of  steroid injection and its benefits.  If epicondylitis progresses to an advanced stage,  it may result in complete or partial tear of the ECRB. In such cases, with partial tear, there is a definite role for PRP  (platelet rich plasma ) injections which yield complete relief in 50% of cases.

Complete tear may fail to heal by itself and necessitates repair of the ECRB tendon to the bone followed by a structured Physiotherapy to yield complete functional outcome" says Dr. M. Shyam Sundar of Ortho-One, a Specialist in Shoulder & Elbow Surgery, Joint Replacement, Sports Medicine.

They are the most active muscles helping our daily activity and tend to get tight.  Women who stand and work in the kitchen for long hours often get calf muscle pain. As the muscle works both at the foot and knee, it can cause pain. Performing calf stretch regularly will be a preventive way to avoid such problems.

Selecting the correct method, correct dosage of exercise is also the key for obtaining good results. When the stretch is done, there will be a sense of stretch followed by pain and it will be due to the stretching of the muscle.

The body has to be held in that position where you feel the stretch and you can count till 20.  Perform 5 times of these stretch exercises in a session and during the day.

This is recommended for people facing knee pain, foot pain, and sometimes back pain. It is also applicable for those who work in a standing position for long hours, and also for those who walk a lot, regular Gym goers, Sports athletes etc.

Mr.Ganesan - HOD of our Physiotherapy Dept recommends these simple exercises for everyone.

What are the symptoms of RA?
The warning signs of RA are:
Joint pain and swelling

Anyone can get RA. The disease is two to three times more common in women than in men, but men tend to have more severe symptoms. It usually starts in middle age. But young children and the elderly also can get it.
What are the causes of RA?
Doctors don’t know the exact cause. Something seems to trigger the immune system to attack the joints and sometimes the other organs. Few experts have a thought that a virus or bacteria may trigger changes in the immune system, causing it to attack the joints.. Certain genetic patterns may make some people more likely to get RA than others.
How Is RA Treated?
The different treatment options for RA include medications, rest and exercise and in some cases, surgery to correct the joint damage. The treatment will be given by considering several things, including the patient’s age,  health, medical history, and how severe the case is.
